Siva temple in & around Kancheepuram

AADHAV’S TEMPLE VISITS KAANCHEEPURAM


Kaancheepuram is one of the Saptha mooksha puri. The others are Ayodhya , Madhura , Maya , Avanti , Kaasi and Dwaraka. Saivam , Vaishnavam and Shaktham have tremendous importance here. This is one of the Panja Bhoodha Stalams of Shivaa. This is the Prithvi stalam (land). People believe that anybody who is born in Kaancheepuram  will  atain  mukthi. Among the Panja Bhoodha Stalams of Shakthi Kaancheepuram is the Aahaaya (shy).
 There  are 118 Rudhraas who are the heads (leaders) of one crore Rudhraas. 118 lingas were worshipped by each Rudhraa. 100 Rudhraas who rule the galaxy have worshipped 100 lingas. The 2000 sons of Dhakshan have worshipped 2000 lingas. 
Apart from these lingas worshiped by 8 Bidhyeshwars , Mandalaadhipathis , Lakshmi , Shakthi and Saraswathi , Ashtabhairavars , 10 avathaaras of Vishnu (though Kalki is not counted Vishnu is said to have worshipped Shivaa after Designing his structure). The lingas worshipped by Ashtadhigbalagas , navagrahas , Vishnu in various forms , panjabhoodhas and Devas are said to be found in Kaancheepuram. Lingas worshipped by Nayanmaars are also found here.

1.RAMAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM 
Ramaeswarar is one of the Dwaadasa lingas. Dwaadasa means 12. There are 12 lingas around the Sarva Theertha. Stories say that worshipping these 12 lingas after a Snaan (bath) in the Sarva Theertha pond by lighting lamps rescues us from Pithru Shaabaas. Rama is said to have performed his Pithroo Karma on the bank of this Sarva Theertha. This linga was worshipped by Shri Rama. This linga is found in the then karai of the pond.

2.LAKSHMANAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM


Lakshmanaeswarar is found in the Then karai of the Sarva Theertha Pond. The linga was worshipped by Lakshmana.





3.JALANDHARAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
Jalandharaeswarar was worshipped by an Asura called Jalandhar. This linga was found near the Paadal Petra Stalam , Onankaanthanthalee which is one of the 5 major shivaa temples sung by Naalavrs. Later on Jalandharaeswarar was brought into the big temple and now is found there. This is located in a place called Panjuppaettai in Kaancheepuram.



4.KAANDHEASWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
Kandhaeswarar was worshipped by an Asura called Kanthan. He is always referred along with another Asura called Onan. This linga is one of the twin lingas of the Onankandhanthalee , which is one among the 5 Paadal Petra Sthalams. This is located in a place called Panjuppaettai in Kanchipuram.




5.YOGALINGAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
Yoagalingaeswarar is one of the 12 lingas found around the Sarva Theertha pond. He is said to bless his devotees with all boons. This linga is found on the East side (Kizhakku karai) of the holy tank.


6.VISWANADHAR - KANCHIPURAM
Viswanaadhar is one of the 12 Dwaadasa lingas. This linga has been brought from Kaasi and therefore also called Kaasi Linga. This is found on the western side (Maelakkarai) of the holy tank.



7.RAMANADHAESWARAR - VEMMBAKKAM , KANCHIPURAM
Vembakkam is a village situated 15 km west of Kaancheepuram. Rama has worshipped this linga and hence the name Ramanadhaeaswarar has been obtained. This village was earlier called Vanpaakkam.





8.KAILAASANAADHAR - VENGALATHOOR , KANCHIPURAM
Vengalathoor is a village situated 18 km west to Kaancheepuram. The Kailaasanaadhar temple is found near the place where the village ends.







9.AANANDHEESWARAR - BILLANTHAANGAL , KANCHIPURAM
Billanthaangal is a village found between Kaancheepuram and Cheyyar. The temple is very small with a few deities and is neat.




10.KANIKANDAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Kanikandaeswarar temple is found in pillayarpaalayam in kancheepuram. The history of this temple is unknown.








11.KAAYAROHANAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The kaayrohanaeswarar temple is found in pillayarpaalayam near the Thaayar Kulam. The story goes this way. When the period of existence for Vishnu and Brahma was said to come to an end Lord Shivaa (who has no aadhi and andha) carried their bodies and performed dance since Shivaa embraced Vishnu and Brahma and saved them from non existence the name Gaayaarohanaeswarar has been obtained Mahalakshmi and Guru Bhagwan has worshipped here. There is a special sannidi for Guru. This temple is considered as a Guru parihara stalam. 








12.CHIDAMBARAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
 The Chidambaraeswarar temple is found in pillayarpaalayam. This is one of the Panja boodha stalas of Kaancheepuram.





13.KADAKAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM

The Kadagaeswarar temple is situated on the way from Pachaivannar temple to Kaamatchi Amman temple. The Ambaal has worshipped this Shivaa in the form of a crab (Kadaga). One can find the shilpas of Shivaa and Ambaal behind the linga.



14.NAGARAESWARAR (BUS STAND) - KANCHIPURAM
The Nagaraeswarar temple is found behind the Bus Stand in Kaancheepuram.


15.MADHNGEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
Madhangeeswarar temple was worshipped by Madhanga Rishi. This Rishi wanted to control his 5 senses. He stayed and worshipped this linga. This temple was later built by Pallavas. The lion carved pillars is a speciality of this temple and the construction of the Pallavas.






16.DHARMAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The dharmaeswarar temple is found near the old railway gate of Kaancheepuram. Yudhishtira (dharma) the eldest of the Pandavaas has worshipped this linga.



17.SIDHEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM

The sidheeswarar temple is located near the Pachayappa High school in Kaancheepuram. This Suyambhu linga was worshipped by sidhars.While bathing in the river the turmeric from the body of Kamakshi Amman got dissolved in the water and therefore Majal Neer kalvoy. She worshipped shivaa in  a form of a linga and he was named Manjal Neer koothar. Later he was called the Sidheeswarar.





18.GARUDAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Garudaeswarar temple is located in Adissonpettai. Garudaeswarar is kept inside the Muktheeswarar temple. This garudaeswarar was worshipped by garuda and his mother.  Garuda’s step mother Kathuru imprisoned his mother Subhukarunai. He wanted to release his mother so he brought Amirdham from devaloka and gave it to his mother and released her. He worshipped this linga and obtained the strength to kill his step brothers.


19.VAZHKARUTHEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Vazhakarutheeswarar temple is located in Adissonpettai. Legal cases were not taken to the king’s court , instead brought to this temple. Shivaa of this temple solves all the problems placed in front of him. Still people approach the Vazhakarutheeswarar with cases to solve their problems.


20.VISWANAADHAR , VANEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
Vanneeswarar and Viswanaadhar are 2 shivaa lingas found in Chinna Kaanchipuram. The history of the temples is unknown
21.AADHIPADHEASWARAR - KANCHIPURAM



The Aadhipadhaeswarar temple is located near a place called keerai mandapam in Kaancheepuram. When Brahma was performing yaga , Sraswathi took the form of a river , Vegavathi , and flood towards the yaga at midnight. Vishnu wanted to save Brahma but he could not see the river in the dark. So he created a linga and worshipped Shivaa and sought his help. The linga itself turned into a lamp which emitted very powerful light. With the help of this light Vishnu could stop the river and save the yaga. Vishnu stayed there as the Devas had wished and was called Deepaprakaasar.

22.VIRUPPAKSHEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Viruppaksheeswarar temple is located near the Keerai mandapam in Kaancheepuram. The story of this temple is unknown.


23.ARAMVALARTHA EASWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Aramvalartheeswarar temple is located behind the Keerai mandapam. This place is said to be a place where justice(dharma) was born.

25.KESAVAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM

The Kesavaeswarar temple is located in pillayarpaalayam. It can also be reached from Kailaasanaadhar temple. Mahavishnu also called kesava has worshipped this temple.

26.VANMEEGANAADHAR – KAANCHIPURAM
The Vanmeeganaadhar temple is located in pillayarpaalayam in the center of a farm. In Kaancheepuram all the munivars (rishi’s) has worshipped lingas. This linga was worshipped by sage Valmiki
 27.NAARADHEASWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
Naradheaswarar is located outside Kailaasanaadhar temple. This linga was worshipped by naradha.



 28.JAYANTHEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Jayantheeswarar temple is found in a school near Kailaasanaadhar temple. This linga was worshipped by Indhiran’s son Jayanthan.




 29.VEERARAGHAVAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Veeraraghavaeswarar temple was worshiped by Ragavan , the well known Rama. When Rama stayed in Kaancheepuram every morning he worshipped lingas. If he could not find any linga he made his own linga with mud , stone , clay or any other substance he could get. This is one of the lingas of Kancheepuram worshipped by Rama


 30.LAKSHMANAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Lakshmanaeswarar linga  was worshipped by Lakshman. Whenever Rama worshipped shivaa we can find lakshmana doing the same. As an obedient younger brother he worshipped the same linga as Rama did or sometimes made a linga of his own. This is one of those lingas worshipped by Lakshman.

32.VISHWAKSENAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM

The Vishwaksenaeswarar temple was worshiped by Vishwaksena. Vishwaksena drove the chariot for Mahavishnu. This linga is place in the Astabhairava temple or the choleeswara temple.

33.KALAHASTHEESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Kaalaastheeswarar temple is one of the Panja Bhoodha temples of Kaancheepuram. This temple is located near the thirumetrali (Paadal Petra Sthalam ) in pillayarpaalayam

 34.VILVANAADHEESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Vilvanaadheeswarar temple was worshipped by Bhilva. This tmple was worshipped by thirunaanasambhandhar. Some say that the dry leave which fell from a Bhilva tree together turned into a stone linga for the sake of a devotee. This temple is behind the Sambandhar temple.

The Athreeswarar temple was worshipped by the sage Athri. We find that the lingas worshipped by many sages are on the banks of the vegavathi river. Now we can find this linga inside the Pachayappa Women’s college. The Kuthcheaswarar was worshipped by sage Kutsa. This linga has been place beside the Athreeswarar linga.



38.GAUTHAMAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Gauthamaeswarar was worshipped by sage Gauthama. This is found under an Ashwatha tree beside the Uthirameroor road. People are taking steps to construct a temple.
39.ARUNAACHALAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Arunaachalaeswarar temple is one of the Panja Bhoodha Sthalams of Kaancheepuram. This is located near the Dhaamal war street.
 40.SOORIYAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Soorieaswarar was worshipped by the sun god Sooriya. This is one of the sooriya parihara Sthalams among the Nava navagraha stalams. This is located in the Dhaamal war street.


41.MALLIGARJUNAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Maligajunaeswarar temple was worshipped by Arjuna of the Pandavas. This temple is found in a place called malligai thottam beside the Dhaamal war street.
42.MALLIGAVANAEASWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Maligavanaeswarar temple was worshipped by Bheema of the Pandavas. This temple is found in a place called malligai thottam beside the Dhaamal war street.
43.VEERATTANAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Veerataanaeeswarar temple is found in the Dhaamal war street.  Saakiyanaayanaar threw small stones on the linga considering them as flowers and worshipped the Veerataanaeswarar. The idol of the Naayanaar is found here. Kongana Sidhar performed Thava and attained innumerable Sidhis by staying in this temple and worshipping Shivaa. Stories say that when lord Shivaa burnt Kaalaagni Rudhrars with his third eye he danced uncontrollably with a loud laugh in this place. So this linga is also called as Veeratagaasar. All the parivaara Devtas  ran away from this place after viewing this sight. So in this temple they are meant to be invisible. This is said on Sanskrit that they exist in the form of Chitra Roopa and Paadhuka Roopa.

Vedal is situated at a distance of 7 km from kancheepuram. Mahavishnu has worshipped shivaa of this temple and thus the name perumaaleeswarar has been functioned.

The thaanthondreeswarar temple is situated in the eakambaranaadhar sannidhi street. Thaanthondreewarar was worshipped by rishi upamanyu. He obtained gnana and everlasting youth after worshipping this shivaa.

The Macheaswarar temple was worshipped by Mathsya the first Avatar of Vishnu. This temple is situated on the way to the bus stand near the market. After the vadha performed by Vishnu as mathsya he worshipped this shivaa to come out of the Pavam which surrounded him.

50.PAANDAVAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Paandavaeswarar temple was found near the Railway track. Now it is kept inside Paranjoodhi Amman temple. The linga was worshipped by the 5 Paandavaas namely , Yudhishtra , Bheema , Arjuna , Nakula and Sahadeva.

51.LINGABAESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The lingabaeswarar temple is found inside the Kaayarohanaeswarar temple. The linga was found in a field initially. Stories about this temple are unknown

The lakshmeeswarar temple is found in Krishnan street. The linga was worshipped by Lakshmi.. The Kalki avatar of Mahavishnu is not still in existence but Vishnu had designed his structure of the avatar. He along with his wife Lakshmi worshipped Shiva lingas in this farm
54.KARKEESWARAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Karkeeswarar temple is found beside the Lakshmeeswarar temple.  This linga was worshipped by Mahavishnu in the form of Kalki. The Kalki avatar of Mahavishnu is not still in existence but Vishnu had designed his structure of the avatar. He along with his wife Lakshmi worshipped Shiva lingas in this farm.

The suklaeswarar temple is located in the road leading to Arakkonam.this linga was worshipped by Sukra. This is considered as the Sukra Parihaara Sthalam.

The Rudhrakoteeswarar temple is located in Pillayarpaalayam. Stories say that this linga was worshipped by 1crore Rudhraas. This temple is opposite to Chidambaraeswarar temple.





59.SIDHEESWARAR 2 – KAANCHIPURAM
The Sidheeswarar temple was worshipped by many Sidhars. There are innumerable sidhars existing in this world. They always spent their time in chanting Lord Shivaa’s name , worshipping Shivaa and in meditation. So we could find Many Sidheewarar temples here and there in a holly place like Kaancheepuram. Some believe that the Sidhars live there but invisible. One who worships the Sidheeswarar lingas will be blessed with all boons.



60.UTRUKKAETTA MUKTHEESWARAR – KAANCHIPURAM
The Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar temple is found near Thirumetrali temple which is one among the Paadal Petra Sthalam. Thirunanasambandhar Naayanmaar was singing songs about the Thirumetralinaadhar outside the temple. Lord Shivaa hid himself behind the crowd who were listening to the songs and overheard the songs. He transformed himself in to a linga. This linga was called Utru Ketta Muktheeswarar. We can find the sanbandhar temple built in the place where Sambandhar stood and sang the songs.


61.OADHA URUGEESAR - KAANCHIPURAM
The Oadha Urugeesar Sannidhi (temple) is found inside the Thirumetralinaadhar temple. Mahavishnu wanted to transform himself into the form of a linga. Lord Shivaa told him that his wish could be full filled when Thirunanasambandhar visited the temple. Vishnu started performing his Thava there. He created the theertham called Chakratheertham. The place where Vishnu performed the Thava is now the place where the Pachaivanna perumaal temple is located. When Thirunanasambandhar sang songs Mahavishnu melted into a linga on hearing the songs. In front of the linga we find the feet of Mahavishnu. Thus the name Oadha Urugeesar has been obtained.

62.HARISAABHABAYAMTHEERTHAAR - KANCHIPURAM
The Harisaabhabayamtheerthaar temple is located near Kaathikeya theatre. Mahavishnu wanted to attain saabha vimochana form the sabha given by Rishi Brihu. The linga worshipped by him for this cause is known as harisaabhabayamtheerthaesawarar.

The Muktheeswarar temple is found near the bus stand. There was a holy tank called Sirpi theertham. Now no symptom of the tank is seen. The Shivaa of the temple was called Sirpeeswarar in olden days. Ravathi the daughter of Gubera has worshipped this linga.

The mahalingaeswarar temple is found near the Veerataanaeswarar temple. Vishnu and Brahma together worshipped this linga. This temple is considered as Kedhu Parihaara Sthalam.

69.KANGANAESWARAR – KAANCHEEPURAM
The Kanganaeswarar temple is located in the Kammaala Theru. The Kangana (which is an ornament worn in the hand) of Parvati is said to have worshipped this Linga when the mother Uma was in Thava.



70.MANIKANDAESWARAR – KAANCHIPURAM
The manikandaeswarar temple is found in chinaa Kaancheepuram. The devas created this linga and worshipped the deity for vimochana for all the Pavam (sins) they had committed. Further they prayed to god for everlasting life. Later Brahma and Vishnu worshipped manikandaeswarar because they were also one of causes for making Shivaa drink the poison released during the churn of the Paarkadal to obtain amudham. This temple is considered as Sani Parihaara Sthalam.

71.KAASYABAESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM
The Kaasyabheaswarar temple is located near Pachayappas women’s college. The linga was worshipped by Rishi Kaasyapa.

72.AANGEERASEASWARAR – KANCHEEPURAM
The Aangeeraeaswarar temple is located outside the Saanthaaleeswarar temple. This linga was worshipped by Rishi Aangeerasa.

73.SAANTHAALEESWARAR-KAANCHEEPURAM
The Saanthaaleeswarar temple is located behind the Pachayappas women’s college. Rishi Vyaasa earlier chanted that Naarayana is the only Parab Brahma. Later when he realized that his conception was wrong he created this linga and attained Saabha vimochana. This story is learnt from the Puraana called Saarnthasayam. The Nandhi of this temple is special.





74.PANAAMUDEESWARAR – KAANCHEEPURAM
The Panamudeeswarar temple is located near the Keerai mandapam. The snakes feared that their destruction is due to Garuda. They created a linga and worshipped the deity to come out of this fear. Shiva wore snakes as his ornament and the story Garuda Soukkyama arose from this place.

The Edhir Veerataanaeswarar temple is located in Kammaala Theru. When Shiva danced fiercely all the devas came away from the place and prayed to Shiva to  save them from fear. Shiva appeared in the form of a linga and they were rid of fear. Since this happened opposite to Veerataanaeswarar temple the linga was called Edhir Veerataanaeswarar.
79.HANUMANDHAEASWARAR - KAANCHEEPURAM

The Hiranyaeswarar temple is one of the Dwaadasa lingas around the Sarva Theertha. This linga was worshipped by Hiranyan. The Asura Hiranya worshipped this linga and got the boon that he cannot be killed or made to perish by animals, any living thing, Bhoomi , Aahaaya, hot and dry places inside and outside of his dwelling during night and day, etc. After performing Thava for several years he acquired the boon in this Sthalam.

81.SEETHEASWARAR – KAANCHEEPURAM
The Seetheaswarar temple is one of the Dwaadasa lingas around the Sarva Theertha. This linga was worshipped by Seetha during the Vana Vaasa when she accompanied Rama.

The Viswanaadhar temple is one of the Dwaadasa lingas around the Sarva Theetha. Stories say that Viswanatha of Kaasi wanted to stay in Kaanchi since it was considered as the Sacred Sthalam in the south. This linga Pradhishta was made by a saint. So people who worshipped this linga after a Snaan in the Sarva Theertha will acquire more Punniyams thsn in Kaasi.

The Anandhapadhmanabaeswarar temple is found in a small street behind a house. Vishnu worshipped this linga and attained relief from the curse given by Uma. The shilpa of Anandhapadmanaba is seen behind the linga. This temple is considered as Kedhu Parihara Stalam.


86.RUDHRAKOTEESWARAR – KONERIKKUPPAM , KANCHIPURAM
 The Rudhrakoteeswarar temple is situated in Konerikkuppam. This lionga was worshipped by 1 crore Rudhraas. Temples worshipped by Rudhraas acquire the name Rudhrakoteeswarar or Rudhraeswarar. Some of the temples in Kaancheepuram worshipped by Rudhraas are Konerikkuppam Rudhrakoteeswarar, Pillayarpaalayam Rudhrakoteeswarar, aanandha Rudhraeswarar, Maha Rudhraeswarar, anadhi Rudhraeswarar etc. this linga is one among them.

The Bageeradheeswarar temple is found near the Madhangeeswarar temple. Just a furlong from the Bus stand. This  linga was worshipped by Baheeradhan. Baheeradhan was a great devotee of shivaa who established lingas. The hundredth linga of linga of Baheeradha is found in the Ganagaadheeswarar temple of Puraisawaakkam in Chennai. Baheeradha was a person who brought anga into his world. During his Thava in Arvasthan the people of Arvasthan suffered without water he brought a regai of Ganga from the Himalayas which is now the lingest river in the world Nile.


91.VEGAVADHEESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM

The Vegavadheeswarar temple is situated in CSM thoppu. It is located in the southern banks of the river Vegavathy. This linga was worshipped by Saraswathy. When Sarawathy took up the form of vegavathy river to stop the Brahmas Thava she was stopped and sent back by Vilakkoli Perumaal with the help of the light given by Aadhi Padheaswarar as Yadhothkaari perumaal stopped the force of the river by his sayana posture. On her retreat she worshipped this linga to come away from the sin of trying to prevent brahmas Thava.

The Vishakandeeswarar temple (kaalahastheeswarar) is found inside the panamaneeswarar temple. The poison released from the snake vaasuki during the churn of the Paarkadal wasa consumed by lord shivaa. When the poisn reached the throat of shivaa Paarvathi got hold of his neck tightly so that the poison could not spread into his body. This made shivaa giddy. This shivaa linga denotes this story. This linga is know known as Kaalahastheeswarar.   

104.PANAAMANEESWARAR – KANCHIPURAM

The panamaeeswarar temple is found near the thiruvalluvar street. The snake Vaasuki worshipped this linga with Maanikam stones. Since Vaasuki released Poison during the churn of the Paarkadal which made shivaa consume it she worshipped this linga to attain relief from the act she had performed.

105.VEDHAVANnEESWARAR (DEVARAJESWARAR) – KAANCHIPURAM

The Vedhavanneeswarar temple is located in the Aadhi sankarar Nagar in chinaa Kaanchipuram. This linga was worshipped by devaraja (varadharaja) perumaal and therefore also known as devarajaeswarar.

The vedhavaneeswarar temple is locatd in the banks of the veagvathi river. The Vanni tree is a sthala vriksha of this temple. No other details about the temple is known.

The Amaraeswarar temple is situated in Merku Raja Veedhi. This temple was worshipped by the devas. Once upon a time the devas quarreled among themselves stating that each one was better than the other. Lord shivaa brought unity among them and removed the pride from their hearts. After realizing their mistake the devas worshipped this linga. Indhran has alsoworshipped Amaraesawarar. This linga was also worshipped by Pallavas.

The Ramaeswarar temple is found in the Kotrampalayam street. This linga is one of the linga worshipped by Rama.

110.LAKSHMANAESWARAR – KAANCHIPURAM.

The lakshmanaeswarar temple is found in the Kotrampalayam street. This linga is one of the linga worshipped by lakshmana.

111.MAASAATHAANTHALI (THAANTHONREASWARAR) – KAANCHEEPURAM

The Maasaathan thali temple is found in a Mandapam which has been converted into a carpenter shop now. This linga was worshipped by sathan. Some say that the so called sathan is refers also to Sastha. Some books refer to this linga as Thaanthonreaswarar.

The Mangalaeswarar temple is found in the street opposite to the street Opposite to the Sankara Mutt. This temple was worshipped by goddess Parvati’s friend Mangala. There is a Mangala theertha tank beside the temple.

Rishi maandakanni married 5 Deva mangais and enjoyed life with them. Later he established this Linga worshipped Shivaa and attained Mukthi.
